More Dead Eye and a practical test
I hadn’t seen The Disaster Box doing Dead Eye when I was physically at Moonshine Brutality but I have come across his video of him doing the stages wherein he performs better than the several people I did see there.
When he does shotgun, he’s using an M1887 (I also run an M1887). He chose that for the shorter ranges so that he wouldn’t have to take as much time for reloading his rifle. John Wick has also taught me that a second gun is the fastest way to reload.
He did do some reloading of his lever action and I noticed in Stage 2 his technique of resting the butt of the gun on his shoulder with the muzzle down. This would lessen the chances of breaking the 180 rule and sweeping the spectators with the barrel. On the other hand, it involves changing the grip on the rifle dramatically twice so there is time lost there. I’d have to practice both to see which was better for me.
He was doing pretty well with the 100 yard shots. So much better than what I had seen on site that it gave me a lot of hope that I could do the thing as well.
With that in mind, I was able to get to the range this weekend and try out my rifle at 100 yards.
Ammo: Fiocchi factory loads, 45 Colt, 250 GR LANFP, 750 FPS, 40 rounds fired
Rifle: Rossi 92, Open sights, firing from sandbag
(none of the hits in the red are mine, recycled target)

There are techniques for calculating accuracy and precision, even some Victorian scoring methods that I find interesting, but in all honesty, for this I do not need anything out to two decimal places.
At 100 yards the elevation is good, maybe an inch low, and I’m about 7 inches to the left. If I am shooting at a steel ISPC plate (man shaped, 10”x30”) at 100 yards, I’ll just Kentucky Windage it and aim for the right of the target to bring the group center of mass.
And that result gives me even more confidence that I can do the thing without embarrassing myself to myself. Nobody there would judge me, they are having too much fun and seem to want you to have fun as well, but if I was out there and emptied my rifle at 100 yards without a single hit, I would not be having fun.
