Tekkoshocon - Thursday
8 April 2010 11:36 pmToday is the first day of the Tekkoshocon anime convention at the Convention Center. They must have gotten to be a pretty big deal to add an entire day of content and start on a Thursday. I went down after work and stood in the registration line for an hour and a quarter. That's pretty impressive for the first day of the con with a fraction of the content that will be on Friday and the dealer room not even opening until tomorrow.
I took targeted flyers for Confluence. I have the standard flier for our convention but if you are going to get the attention of otaku, you need to speak their language. Wen Spencer is going to be our guest of honor this year. I recalled seeing her at a party, gleefully showing off the manga-style cover that was going to be on the Japanese edition of her book "Tinker." So, I went to the Amazon/Japan site and got a copy of that cover, and the cover of "Alien Taste" and added them to my flier. False advertisiing? No. It's just targeted. I also added a line on the bottom indicating the various anime films I was going to be showing as part of the video program. Ultimately, I think having these visual elements on the fliers will get people to pick them up and actually look at them.
I wonder if it's something about anime cons that they don't have freebee tables. Every other kind of con I have ever been to has a table somewhere for people to pile fliers for other cons, books, writers and other stuff that people want to distribute. If there is one table it is generally full to overflowing. At confluence we have space for two tables and could probably fill a third table.
Mysteriously, anime cons have none.
So, I took my pile of several hundred fliers to the con ops and got the same baffled looks I always get at anime cons when I ask where the freebee table is. I then had to explain just what a freebee table was. In the end, they took my pile and said they would put them at the con info desks.
I'm going to print out a few hundred more and, on Saturday, ensure that the info desks are well stocked.
Beyond that, I didn't do much at the con. I watched a few anime videos and wandered around just a little bit. I'll go back tomorrow after work to hit the dealer room so that, when I return in costume on Saturday, I won't be carrying around any bags of stuff.
